Wanaka is located on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka, in
west Otago. Embraced by the Southern Alps, Wanaka is Otago's
second resort town after Queenstown. New Zealand has many
glaciers, mostly in the South Island. Glaciers are huge
rivers of ice, moving slowly down sloping terrain, and these
huge, fascinating ice features are a breath-taking sight.
Exploring the magical glaciers in or around Wanaka is an
experience you will not forget.
Helicopter Ride on Glaciers: Journey into the largely
inaccessible heart of the majestic Southern Alps on a
20-minute helicopter flight to Franz Josef Glacier.
Experience a snow landing and explore the ice falls, to see
some of the most stunning ice architecture of any glacier in
the world. Following a spectacular collapse of the terminal
face in 2012, the glacier is now only accessible by
helicopter. Make your way to a central location in Franz
Josef township, where you will check in for the flight. Lift
off, and fly above the glacier that stretches through
Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Admire the thick forest
that creeps to the edge of the ice and appreciate the
spectacular views of the glacier from above. Midway through
the flight you will land on part of the glacier snowfield in
a location that, without specialized equipment and
mountaineering guides, is only accessible by helicopter.
Soak in the views, capture some incredible photos then
return to the helicopter for the return flight to Franz
Josef township.
Glacier Hot pools: Step into a haven of tranquillity.
Nestled among the lush native rainforest in the heart of
Franz Josef, the Glacier Hot Pools provide a truly unique
setting for absolute relaxation. The private pools are
surrounded by majestic rainforest and offer total seclusion.
Your private pool experience includes private changing
facilities with towels and complimentary entry into the main
pools. After your 45-minute private pool experience, you can
shower and change or head out to main pools. Alternatively,
you are also welcome to enjoy the main pools before your
private booking.
